Monitoring Fatigue Behavior and Life of Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Composite Materials by Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors

The main purpose of this project is to develop a fatigue prediction model by using strain data as the input to calculate remaining useful life (RUL) and fatigue behavior of composite materials. Therefore, the structural health of fiber reinforced polymeric composite materials is going to be monitored under fatigue loading with Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors, which are embedded into the structure during manufacturing process by ingress/egress technique. FBG sensors are going to obtain data from the structure in real time and the condition of the composite structure is going to be monitored during service. This allows to detect damages immediately and to estimate the remaining useful life of the composite material. In addition, the need of periodic inspection, which is performed by taking material out of service, is going to be eliminated.
